Will AI Replace 5,000 AppleCare Staff?

Apple has drawn up a plan involving the layoff of about 5,000 employees who provide customer support through AppleCare and has decided to replace their positions with automated AI-driven phone and web support agents. However, this plan is currently on hold indefinitely, and the company has not stated whether it will reevaluate the proposal or what circumstances would lead to a change in its status.

The proposal is important since it would impact a specific section of Apple's customer support staff by transferring those duties to automated AI agents. These 5,000 positions accounted for about 3% of Apple's entire global workforce, the workforce comprising approximately 166,000 full-time equivalent employees. The plan is still on hold, so the figures refer to proposed cutbacks and not actual layoffs.

Apple’s Financial Position and the Rationale Behind the Proposed Cuts

In fiscal 2025 Apple produced free cash flow of $98.8 billion and had an operating margin of 32.0 per cent. These financial figures explain why the move has been described as a corporate restructuring and an efficiency initiative rather than as a reaction to financial difficulty. With regard to the financial rationale for the cuts, Mark Gurman stated plainly that "from a financial point of view they don't need to do it".

How AI Is Changing AppleCare Customer Support

Apple has already introduced generative AI support assistants into both the 1-800-APL-CARE phone lines and the web chat system in North America, where the assistants carry out the initial customer troubleshooting. Although the proposed layoffs aim at replacing remote support positions with automated phone and web agents, the agents' status is still unchanged at this time.

Why Apple’s Layoff Plan Is on Hold and What Happens Next

The plan is being put on hold indefinitely since it has come to light that the new CEO, John Ternus, is still aiming at achieving company-wide efficiency and cost reductions. Keep an eye on any update to the plan's status and find out whether Apple announces a new decision or timeline.
