A new documentary about Elon Musk just landed in hundreds of theaters, but its TikTok account didn’t get to see it happen. Right as Musk, Alex Gibney’s film about the billionaire, was opening wide across North America, TikTok permanently suspended the account that was promoting it.
Bleecker Street, the distributor, says it was told on October 16, 2026, that the account was facing permanent suspension. Not long after that, it was gone.
That same weekend was supposed to be a big one for the film. Musk started out in only four theaters, in New York and LA, on the weekend of October 9. By the weekend of October 16 it was playing in 472 theaters across North America. So right when the distributor needed TikTok most, it lost the account it had been using to promote the movie. Bleecker Street is appealing the decision.
Why TikTok Suspended the Account
As for why, TikTok reportedly said the account broke its rules on political content. That’s pretty much it, though. TikTok hasn’t said which posts were the problem and hasn’t offered any real public explanation. The account had more than 10,000 followers when it was taken down.
A History of Rejected Ads
If this sounds familiar, it’s because the film already had trouble with social media back in September 2026. TikTok, X, Meta and YouTube all initially rejected paid ads for the trailer. YouTube and Meta eventually reversed course (Meta said the rejection was an error), but TikTok and X held their ground, and they still weren’t running the ads when the account got suspended.
Those are two different things, by the way. September was about paid ads. This time it’s the account itself that got pulled. And from what’s been reported, there’s nothing showing TikTok has removed the documentary from its platform entirely or stopped people from talking about it.
What Happens Next
So we’re still waiting on two things: TikTok explaining what content actually got the account suspended, and a ruling on whether Bleecker Street’s appeal gets it reinstated. Musk's public profile extends beyond the documentary, with Tesla and SpaceX projects also attracting attention, including the company's Roadster project featuring SpaceX thrusters and aerial stunts.
